ABOUT DR. YU
Dr. James Yu is a clinical psychologist and a scholar in mental health practice. He has over fifteen years of professional experience in conducting psychotherapy, counselling, assessment and clinical supervision in the United States and Hong Kong. Besides private practice, he has worked at other settings such as universities, hospital units and community health centres. Fluent in English and Chinese, he is experienced working with clients from diverse cultural and racial backgrounds, including adults, children and families facing a variety of psychological and emotional problems such as anxiety, depression, personality issues, trauma, sleeping problems, eating disorders, adjustment problems for ethnic minorities.
Dr. Yu has published some of his cases in international journals as well as a book chapter on global mental health with Praeger Publishers. In 2015, he co-authored an article on clinical practice which was awarded Best Paper of the Year in a reputable academic journal. Throughout his career, Dr. Yu has endeavored to develop psychology and mental health university-level major programmes. He was the programme director for a number of bachelor and master’s psychology programmes at different times. Regarding his contribution to the profession, he created the translated version of the M-CHAT autism screening tool and the SWAP personality assessment. His dedication to community work is evident by his role as the professional advisor in a best-practice suicide prevention project a few years ago.
Dr. Yu is a warm and compassionate professional who works collaboratively with clients to explore their difficulties from a deep and holistic perspective. He is an experienced practitioner in psychodynamic and existential psychotherapy. From his point of view, psychotherapy and counselling bring about both short-term and long-term benefits.
